Friday. Two days to the Sydney lab’s second Halloween, and the costumes have started early. I counted three vampires in the foyer this evening, two pirates and a man dressed as a test tube. He was my favourite.
Sydney is the lab with the blue door, on George Street, and I am fond of it. Survivors there get from Town Hall station to the airlock in under ten minutes, which is faster than I have ever got anywhere.
The building has plenty of other rooms besides mine, with other monsters and other troubles, and groups too big for my lab book one of those at the same time and race. I have never seen the other rooms. I assume their scientists also live in storerooms. I would like to start a newsletter.
Halloween is a strange time for Gerald. All year he is the most frightening thing in the building. At Halloween, he has competition. He sulks. He paces faster. The teams say he has never been scarier, and I do not tell them it is jealousy.
Two years in Sydney. Gerald still contained. Me still upstairs. Both of us, I think, quite comfortable.
